Northwood Robotics at New York Tech Valley FIRST® Robotics Competition

Mr. Miller, Chair of Northwood's Innovation, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship (IEE) Department and Ms. Agnew, Innovation + Design instructor are in Troy, New York this weekend with Northwood's FIRST Robotics team to compete at the New York Tech Valley FIRST Robotics Competition hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Hundreds of high school student will be participate in the event with teams from New York, New Jersey, Canada, and Brazil set to be at RPI. Teams from this regional compete for a slot in the FIRST World Championship and more than $80 million in scholarship funding.

Teams have been working on robots in response to their challenge which was released in January. It's a Deep Space theme for the challenge this weekend. Take a look at this animation for more details.

The competition schedule for March 7-9 includes:

  • Thursday, March 7: Robot Inspections: Students calibrate controls and electronics for optimizing robot performance, 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Practice matches will take place from noon to 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday, March 8: Opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. with brief remarks from several sponsors. Qualifying matches will immediately follow through 5:45 p.m. Awards ceremony, 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 9: Opening ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m., with remarks from sponsors and state/local elected officials. Qualifying matches will take place until noon. Final rounds will run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Awards and closing ceremony will take place from 4:45 to 6 p.m.
