Vonn Comes Back to His Old Stomping Grounds
Thomas Vonn, a member of the Class of 1994, has accepted the position of Alpine Technical Director for Northwood School and NYSEF (New York Ski Educational Foundation). He will be one of eight alumni serving in a faculty or staff role at Northwood for the 2018/2019 academic year. “In addition to his skiing and coaching expertise, Thomas has a passion for our school and Lake Placid. We are thrilled that an opportunity presented itself to allow Thomas to join Northwood School as a member of our staff,” said Head of School, Mike Maher. For many years, the Northwood Alpine Ski racing program has flourished as a result of its partnership with NYSEF and in his new role, Vonn will be working with all of the athletes in this program.
Thomas Vonn's Accolades
Vonn has had success at the highest levels internationally for the past decade as both an athlete and a coach, and is recognized as a member of Northwood's celebrated list of elite athletes on the school's Fullerton Wall of Recognition. From 1997 until 2005, Vonn was a member of the U.S. Ski team competing on the World Cup circuit and in the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Following his retirement from competition, Vonn served as the primary coach for World Cup and Olympic Champion Lindsey Vonn. During his time coaching, Lindsey won multiple World Cup titles and Olympic medals including a Gold Medal in the downhill at the Vancouver Games. Additionally, Vonn served as a consultant with the U.S. Ski Team and coached aspiring World Cup and Olympic athletes from the United States and several other nations. In speaking about Vonn, Northwood School’s Alpine Program Director Terri DelliQuadri said “I’m excited to have Thomas join our coaching staff in a key leadership position. The addition of Thomas is a significant step towards us achieving the goal of having athletes from Northwood/NYSEF consistently reach the highest levels of national and international competition.”
Thrilled To Be At Northwood
Thomas is also thrilled to be back at his Alma Mater, “I’m really excited to be coming back to Northwood, I have so many great memories from my time there. Northwood was the first time I had ever really lived away from parents, and I really credit my time there with showing me how to become an adult. Besides all of the great friends I made, many of which I’m still in close contact with today, hard work and accountability were my biggest takeaways. I learned to work hard for what I want, because nobody is going to just give it to me, and I learned to be accountable for my actions because I quickly found that the road to success was not paved with excuses."
His tenure will begin later this summer when he accompanies skiers and coaches from Northwood and NYSEF to Europe for training camps in preparation for the upcoming season. “Our athletes and staff have followed Vonn’s career on the World Cup stadium and more recently as a highly successful coach,” Greg Harden, Chairman of NYSEF said. “In this role, he will continue his alpine skiing legacy, hands-on, by building future generations of elite level racers.”
