Another international LEAP offering was the school’s trip to St. Lucia. An Eastern Caribbean island nation and home of the Nelsons, gracious Northwood parents who hosted our students and accompanying faculty.

"The Prep hockey team started the new year at Merrimack College for the Gamesheet Prep Cup Tournament. Northwood went 2-1 beating Nichols School and Mount St. Charles and losing only to Dexter. We also attended the Merrimack vs. Yale non-conference match up. 

We had a week off before we gathered in Buffalo, NY on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We set up practices at Niagara University, Canisius College, and Nichols School during the week.

While most students and faculty enjoy the winter break, Northwood’s College Guidance Office is working late, sometimes well past midnight, to accommodate students in many time zones and residing in countries as distant as South Africa, Hong Kong, and Korea, to ensure they fulfill their college application requirements.

“We prepare around 400 applications each year (plus another 140 or so for graduates who have taken a year or two off and who are now applying), says Director of College Guidance, David McCauley.

This January, Northwood has four exciting LEAP (the school’s Learn, Engage, Apply, Perform program) course offerings.

One is an adventure to Tanzania where ten students and three faculty will participate in a seven-day trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, coupled with a safari in the Serengeti.

Northwood Outing Club’s Director, Bobby O’Connor who will be one of the trip leaders says, “We will start climbing on the Lemosho route which ascends for five days and then descends for two for a total of seven days on the mountain. The 31st Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) World University Winter Games are underway in the host village of Lake Placid, and Northwood is playing a central role in much of the activity.

The FISU Games are the largest global sports events for student-athletes internationally and have brought students from 540 universities and 46 countries to Lake Placid.

While our students are on an extended winter break, the school is hosting 220 alpine athletes during the ten-day competition, and the school is proving to be the ideal location for them. As Assistant… continue reading
