A Distinct Academic Experience
In addition to our comprehensive college-prep curriculum, we offer several distinct academic programs that are unique to Northwood School. Like all other small boarding schools, we provide countless opportunities for "hands-on" learning in our classrooms, but we also go beyond what is offered elsewhere. Our science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses and co-curricular programs provide students with diverse, innovative, world-class learning opportunities in several different areas.
Benefits of STEM Education
High-quality STEM education is critical for students who want to thrive in the modern world. STEM occupations are growing at a significantly faster rate than average, and university graduates with STEM degrees have higher earning potentials than their peers.
However, STEM opportunities do not just enhance learning for science and tech-loving students. Exposure to STEM concepts and hands-on learning provides all students with the critical thinking skills, mathematical literacy, and science acumen they need to become the next generation of innovators across all types of academic, athletic, and personal pursuits.
Signature STEM Programs at Our New England Boarding School
Our signature STEM programs focus on the following areas:
- Leadership, Engage, Apply, Perform (LEAP)
- Innovation and Design
- Entrepreneurial Studies
- Robotics & Engineering
These courses provide students with a chance to gain practical "First-Hand Experiences" that are seldom offered at the high school level. These experiences help our students develop their passions and interests, as well as distinguish Northwood School students during the college admission process.

STEM at a Private, New England Boarding School
STEM courses and co-curricular opportunities are critical for contemporary students, and at Northwood School, we are uniquely positioned to provide our students with STEM-based opportunities they cannot get anywhere else. From the stunning natural beauty and science-in-action of the Adirondack Mountains, to the extensive learning opportunities at the Innovation Hub in downtown Lake Placid, to the collaborations with local scientists and business owners, our STEM programming is designed to nurture our students academically and personally.
At Northwood School, we are not like other boarding schools located in the middle of nowhere. Instead, we are in the center of somewhere special, and our world-class location provides students with the learning and growing opportunities they need to become the curious, engaged, problem solvers of their generation. Northwood School's Leadership, Engage, Apply, and Perform (L.E.A.P.) Program takes students and faculty out of the classroom and lets them engage in collaborative, first-hand academic experiences. Students choose a LEAP project near the beginning of the year. Then, they meet several times during the year to explore their topic, and in May, they leave the classroom for a week to focus on their project.
Students work with experts in the fields related to their areas of inquiry, and they have the unparalleled chance toto explore compelling environments and work toward ambitious objectives as they complete their LEAP projects. These learning experiences help students develop the skills and confidence that will allow them to succeed in the face of future real-world challenges.
The L.E.A.P. Showcase that caps the week allows students to share their adventures in learning with the school and the local community. Ready to LEAP and watch yourself soar? Then, it's time to learn more about Northwood's LEAP Program and offerings.
The computer programming and robotics programs at our boarding school transform students from passive users to active creators. Through introductory and applied courses and participation in a robotics co-curricular option, students learn engineering, design, coding, and programming concepts essential to a variety of fields.
They then employ these concepts to design, fabricate, wire, and program functioning robots. Whether you're interested in computer programming and robotics as a future career option or simply want to round out your college preparatory education, you should learn more about the computer programming and robotics offerings at Northwood School.
Northwood's Entrepreneurial Studies course provides students with the knowledge and experience to transform a passion project into a successful business. In addition to gaining a better understanding of economic theory, Entrepreneurial Studies students learn the common traits of successful enterprises from small businesses to multinational corporations, as they develop their own business plans and work with local businesses to execute their entrepreneurial visions.
Just as the science programs at our boarding school are not restricted to future scientists, our entrepreneurial programs are designed to benefit students who plan to go into business as well as those who expect to pursue other career paths. Regardless of our students' long-term goals, entrepreneurial education helps them learn how to identify problems and apply creative solutions to real-world challenges. In this program, students develop critical life skills such as teamwork, empathy, and negotiation, preparing them to navigate an uncertain future across all types of careers and disciplines. In our boarding school's Innovation and Design program, Northwood School students start with independent research and use class sessions to identify potential projects. Then, they learn methods of evaluating existing research and information, conceive solutions, test their ideas through prototypes, and ultimately develop innovations that take action to resolve real-world problems.
With help from visiting experts, our Innovation and Design students also learn how design can lead to entrepreneurial opportunities. This program gives dreamers and makers the skills to bring their ideas from concept to reality. Curious about how this program helps to future-proof our students and makes them stand out in the college admissions process? Then, we invite you to learn more about our hands-on innovation and design at Northwood.
