Dear Northwood Community,
Soon you will be receiving an email from Mr. Maher regarding the upcoming winter break and the return to campus in January. Due to the ever-changing and evolving COVID pandemic, we have thought long and hard about how to maintain a healthy and safe community. Paramount in our thinking was the mental health of our students. These times have been difficult on all, but our community could not be prouder of how our students have handled themselves during the past two months. As a school we continue to have internal discussions about athletics. We have come to the decision that we will allow our students to participate in competition during the upcoming brea. We understand some families will have obligations during the break and may not be able to attend.
Over the vacation our winter sports coaches will schedule games and races and will be in contact soon with how this schedule will play out. It is our hope these competitions will help alleviate some of the challenges we have all faced.
Considering the pandemic, coupled with the restrictions of being a New York school, we have taken each athletic competition individually and assessed the state restrictions and the safety of each location. Our athletic department will closely monitor the disease and travel restrictions, but we fully support our coaches in scheduling events over the vacation.
We have concluded the following for each of our competitive sport teams:
Snowsports:
- Return to campus from Sunday River with no quarantine. Must be within cohort while on campus – students will be tested Tuesday after they return.
- Return from Sunday River to Lake Placid (off-campus ) and no quarantine - students will be tested the Tuesday after they return.
- Return to campus with a strict quarantine if returning from an area that requires it - students will be tested upon return.
Lastly, I want to be clear that when we return the entire community to campus, we will have to revisit our travel and competition protocols to have the safety of our entire community again at the forefront.
Best,
Gino Riffle
